Perfectionism

In psychological terms, perfectionism is the belief that perfection exists and it can be attained depending on the subject. This can be good, but in its pathological form, it can be the belief that anything less than perfect is unacceptable.

The normal perfectionist just enjoys pleasure by the effort he puts to elaborate something and the outcome of this. The neurotic one is unable to feel satisfaction because they never seem to things good enough, not perfect. The neurotic measures his value and worth in terms of accomplishment and productivity, while they strive for impossible goals.

The Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale by Hewitt & Flett rates 3 aspects of a perfectionistic attempt to appear perfect. The 1st is advertising one’s own perfection. 2nd is also about inhibition and is avoiding situations in which one might appear imperfect and the  3rd is  hiding or not disclosing situations in which one has been imperfect. Almost all of our lives thus is described by the latter.

A perfectionist say, would not be satisfied by seeing a semi bold head. He would take the razor and perfect the head. This is what we usually do to fight hair loss if we accept it as a fact and abandon effort to recover our hair.

A normal perfectionist is focused on personal integrity, maintain a good respectable image, he needs one to feel safe. He can be wise and inspiring to others. They tend to dissociate themselves from what he regards as their flaws. They can be hypocritical and critical towards others to appear superior to those compared.  The positive aspect is that it may lead to great achievement, as it is necessary for scientific research. It commits one to keep working until reality reaches their imagination.

The extreme though, the so called ‘all or nothing’ thinking may lead to depression, an achievement is either perfect or useless.

Smoking, Alcohol and Medications: Their Effects on Hair Restorations Surgery

Before a hair restorations surgery or for that matter any surgery, doctor will defiantly ask the patients if they smoke, consume alcohol or any other medications or herbal products. This is important. Why? What’s the connection? The reason is patients with these addictions tend to bleed heavily during surgery or after the surgery. In some cases, blood also oozes from the wounds.

Patients are often asked the following questions before a hair restorations surgery. Are you addicted to smoking? If yes, how many cigarettes do you smoke per day and how often? Do you consume alcohol? If yes, how much quantity and how often? Are you addicted to drugs like cocaine or heroin? How much and how often? Are you on any drugs prescribed by a doctor? If yes, the name of the drug and the prescribed dosage per day? Do you take any self medication or vitamin supplements? Do you use any herbal products?

It is important that the patient gives correct information to the doctor. Any false or incomplete information may lead to unnecessary complications during or after the surgery. These questions are asked to judge the chances of heavy bleeding or oozing of blood after surgery and not to change the lifestyle of a person. Hence, the patient need not feel awkward or conscious about these questions and must extend full support to the doctor. In case, the patient is not aware of the name of a prescribed medicine or does not remember it, he/she should call back the hospital to inform about the medication.

At times, there may be a delay in hair restoration surgery due to the medical condition of the patient. If the doctor anticipates that there may be excessive bleeding during or after surgery, he may delay the surgery. These decisions are based on the patient’s prior medical history, his personal characteristics and his current addictions like smoking, alcohol, drugs, prescribed medications, herbal drugs etc. In such cases, the doctor might ask the patient to quit smoking or drinking alcohol for a certain period before surgery, or consult the doctor who prescribed the medicine (which you regularly take) to assess your condition and the effect of the medicine on you.

Healthy scalp – Healthy hair:

One thing that most of the people should realize is for the growth of strong and shiny hair, a good scalp plays an important role. The quality of the hair is determined by the state of the hair and the hair gets immensely affected when the scalp is not given proper care. An unhealthy scalp results in severe conditions and hence it is very much essential to maintain a clean and a healthy scalp.

Similar to the skin care, a day to day care for the scalp is also very important as over exposure of the scalp, where the skin is thin, results in potential damage. A healthy scalp signifies the volume and shine of the hair and this can be done by maintaining the accurate balance of oils. The hair can get damaged if the scalp is washed more than once in every four days or so as it destructs the natural defenses of the body. A flaky or a dull scalp can be reconditioned through the oils.

Regular shampoos and conditioners used during shower also defend the scalp and also the moisturizing creams, when used before bed, works ideally for the damaged skin. The moisturizing creams comprising of calendula or marigold oil, assists in the promotion of the growth of the new skin. People with itchy red rashes on the scalp can opt for the olive oil as it nurtures the skin. But the application of this oil should be avoided when going out in the sun as sunburn is more possible to appear due to excess oil on the head.

Sunburn is one of the main reasons of scalp problems caused due to over exposure of sun or sun equivalent or from ultraviolet radiation. Irrespective of the weather, sunburn can destruct the scalp and sometimes it also initiates the growth of skin cancer. In such case, sun block creams with high factors and even moisturizers are of much help to protect the scalp.

Besides all these attempts, if the red patches, lumps etc still persists, then it is suggested to check with the doctor for proper treatment.
